A new commuter benefits ordinance was passed for Seattle employers. Effective January 1, 2020, businesses in Seattle with 20 or more employees worldwide will be required to offer pre-tax commuter benefits.
This new requirement works to help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions by requiring “covered employers” to offer pre-tax commuter benefits to their “covered employees.” This should encourage those covered employees to use transit options other than single occupancy vehicles when traveling to and from work.
As a leading provider of commuter and other Consumer Directed Benefits, WageWorks issued guidance to employers to provide more information surrounding the new ordinance.
Although the new ordinance goes into effect January 1, 2020, don’t wait too long—employers must have their plans ready no later than January 1—so get started early.
If you want happy, productive employees, make it easier for them to get to work.
